Mayor's Biography

Mayor Keith S. Balla

Keith S. Balla is the 25th and current Mayor of  Watchung, New Jersey.  Since Mayor Balla took office the Borough has increased technology to live stream video all Municipal Council meetings, conduct live meetings along with zoom to enable full access and transparency for residents. Under his leadership Watchung has advanced the digitization of records within the Borough Clerk’s office along with the new Borough Clerk, Edith Gil and is working on the redesign of the Borough website.   Working with new Business Administrator, James Damato, he has been instrumental implementing new policies, procedures and operation efficiencies such as the combination of the borough Engineer positon with the Director of Public Works bringing about an annual saving over $100,000 per year. Mayor Balla has overseen the review of each municipal department to evaluate the budgetary needs and find opportunities for savings with shared services and outsourcing and prudent fiscal measures.

Mayor Balla led the Borough during the world wide COVID 19 Pandemic and State of Emergency to ensure that Borough residents and employees were as a safe and healthy as possible.  Mayor Balla formed and led the Library Ad Hoc Committee comprised of diverse members and professionals to move forward with the plan for a new state of  the art  combined Library, Arts and Community Center.  Mayor Balla formed the first Watchung Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Respect (“WIDER”) Committee  to develop plans to educate, train, recruit and retain  diverse employees and businesses working for and with the Borough. In an effort to make County roads through Watchung safer, Mayor Balla worked with the County Commissioners to lower the speed limits and add additional safety measures to protect Watchung residents. 

In his fulltime profession, Mayor Balla leads the Forensic, Litigation, Valuation Group  at PKF O’Connor Davies LLP a large regional accounting and consulting firm. He is a testifying expert on economic damages and valuation engagements.  He performs forensic investigations with an additional specialty in government operations investigating fraud and inefficiencies in government entities.

A 1980 graduate of Rutgers University with a B.A. in Accounting, Mayor Balla earned his CPA certificate and a number of other certifications integral to his practice area. He has hosted the cable television program, “ The MARCUM Report”, “It’s All About Money”, appeared on NJN, News 12, CN8 and was the expert retained by Dateline NBC to perform an investigation which aired on Dateline.

Mayor Balla and his wife Karen are the parents of Jonah, Noah and Hannah.  Mayor Balla and his entire family have devoted countless hours and resources to numerous charitable, religious and not for profit endeavors to positively impact the lives of others.
