Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) make up a growing share of new car sales and represent a significant percentage of cars on the road in New Jersey. EVs are a cost-effective means of transportation, require less maintenance than traditional vehicles, and provide significant environmental benefits.

Unlike traditional vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel fuel, electric vehicles run on electricity stored in high-capacity batteries. These batteries must be charged using Electric Vehicle Supply/Service Equipment (EVSE), which can be installed at home or found in many commercial locations.

Although they are popular among Watchung residents, many people remain hesitant due to outdated information and concerns about costs. In order to address these concerns, we are providing general information about EVs, as well as resources for grants and incentive programs for both EVs and charging infrastructure. While there are certainly plenty of resources available on the web, feel free to contact the Watchung Green Team directly for more information.

EVSE Installation

Watchung adopted code 28-508 in 2022 “…to promote and encourage the use of electric vehicles by requiring the safe and efficient installation of EVSE and Make-Ready parking spaces through municipal parking regulations and other standards." Information for submitting a permit application and scheduling inspections can be found on the construction page of the borough website.

Electric Vehicle FAQ

An EV is any car, truck, bus, or commercial vehicle that is partially or completely powered by a high-capacity battery that can be charged from an external source. These include all-electric vehicles, also called battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), and plugable hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). These vehicles can charge their batteries by drawing electricity directly from the grid and other off-board electrical power sources. In contrast, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are fueled with liquid fuels, like gasoline, but use small batteries to recapture energy otherwise lost during braking (ultimately boosting fuel economy). PHEVs can use off-board electricity for power, which classifies them as EVs, but can also use liquid fuels and operate similar to HEVs if necessary. Please visit the U.S. DOE’s EV information page for more information.

EV Incentives and Grants

Various grant programs and incentives are available from both the Federal government and the State of New Jersey. Programs are available for consumers, governmental organizations, and businesses, including owners of multi-family dwellings.
