Drug Addiction Epidemic in Our Back Yard

HILLSBOROUGH – Despite efforts to reduce its growth, the heroin epidemic in New Jersey isn’t letting up. The number of heroin deaths throughout New Jersey, including the suburbs, are triple that of national statistics. As a result, it is more important than ever that we stay informed about the epidemic in own our backyard.
Somerset County Freeholder Brian D. Levine invites adult members of the community and students in grade eight and above to an informative panel discussion about drug addiction that will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26. The program will take place at the Manville-Hillsborough Elks Lodge, located at 1500 Brooks Blvd. Register at http://tinyurl.com/ManvilleTHM
The panel will discuss opioid misuse; the warning signs of addiction; the impact on academics, school life, peers and family; treatment and recovery; support that is available to patients and families; drug laws and recent trends in the courts. In addition several treatment agencies will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.
Participating on the panel will be Somerset County Chief Assistant Prosecutor W. Brian Stack; Lorin Gaffen, MA, LPC, LCADC; Student Assistance Counselor Rebecca Balaguer; Lisa Nadine Petitt, a mother involved in the fight against drug addiction; and Heather Walton, a woman in recovery.
This program is sponsored by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the county Youth Services Commission, the county Prosecutor’s Office, the county Sheriff’s Office, the Manville Police Department, EmPoWER Somerset, the Safe Communities Coalition of Hunterdon and Somerset, the Manville Municipal Alliance Committee and the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.
